Author: District Żagań

Stunning landscapes, towns and villages with great history and full of exceptional historical value, the local people with 100-year-old traditions – these are the characteristics of Görlitz Commune.

The third largest commune in Saxony is almost impossible to compare with other places in terms of the variety of interesting history:
  • Pückler’s Park in Bad Muskau, listed as a world heritage by UNESCO;
  • The Large Lent Curtain (German - Großes Zittauer Fastentuch) – exhibited in Zittau, is unique in Germany and for Europe a real rarity;
Görlitz is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany with its well-preserved landmarks and objects from the gothic, renaissance, baroque periods and those from the end of 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Nowhere else can you find so many half-timbered traditional German houses (German –Umgebindehaus) partly supported by wooden poles except in Upper Lusatia (German - Niederlausitz), which is located at the junction of the German, Polish and Czech borders. On the hill in Löbau there is a unique viewing tower made of metal. The castle and monastery ruins on Oybin Hill are witnesses to the history of Europe. The narrow gauge railway in Zittau and Mużaków forest railway attract railway enthusiasts from all over the world. The only botanical park in Europe is located in Notchen with erratic stones in Nochten has been set in the charcoal ex-mining pits. The Culture Island in Zentendorf with unusual wooden constructions, playgrounds and the first in Hotel in Germany set in trees has become a very unique adventure area. In the antique building museum Erlichthof Village in Rietschen you can see some nice wooden log cottages. You can also buy their craftworks.

The landscape and the nature of Görlitz are varied and offer the best conditions for the preservation of the natural environment and tourism. The Żytawskie Mountains in the South, The Königshainer Berge Hills in the Centre and the land of meadows and lakes in the North create a marvelous net of tourist routes perfect for horse riders and cyclists. In the old mine pits holiday resorts have been created which are perfect for water sports e.g. Olbersdorfer See and the Bärwalder See lakes.

The culture and customs show the variety of peoples’ lives. Residing in the area are The Evangelic Sorbian-Lusatians (an ethnic minority) who occupy the areas near Shcleife district. They have preserved their native language, traditions and customs. The inhabitants of Upper Lusatia are known for their hospitality and original dialect.

Factors such as trans-border opportunities of support, and the potential for innovation, achieved by vocational education at every level can guarantee stable relations and business opportunities. Within the County there are a few companies which dominate such as Vattenfall, Siemens, Bombardier and many more medium sized ones which represent a wide range of businesses. Machinery construction, metal industrial treatment, energy production, electronics/ electotechnics, motor companies, textile factories and plastics production are dominate in the area. The County recommends the area as perfect for establishing new businesses. In the region, for the last 15 years companies dealing with environment, biotechnology, transport, computers and textiles have settled and developed. Services are also flourishing.

Energy is an important issue in Görlitz. A lot of activities in the energy sector are inspired by the College of Zittaau-Görlitz in the South of the County, the strip mine in Nochten and the Boxberg power station in the North. Apart from fossil fuels, renewable energy sources are at the top of the agenda for projects and initiatives. Every competent branch of business in The West-Saxon Region is expected to take into account the issue of energy.
